First time at BJJ?
Everything I would want to know before walking in for the first time: where to go, who you will meet, what it costs, what to wear, and how to be a good training partner.
Where to go
Come a few minutes early, look for the Morrinsville BJJ entrance/signage, and ask for a coach when you arrive.
Park safely nearby and bring jandals/slides for walking off the mats.
Cost + how to pay
Membership options are listed below. Ask the club if you are unsure which option suits you or your whānau.
Payment details can be confirmed with the coach/admin team before or after class.
What to bring
- Water bottle
- Jandals/slides for walking off the mats
- Clean towel if needed
- A good attitude and willingness to tap early
Mat rules + etiquette
- No shoes on the mats
- Keep nails short and remove jewellery/watches
- Wear clean training gear
- Tap early and respect the tap immediately
- Tell a coach about injuries before class
- Do not train if you are sick
- Ask before filming or photographing others, especially rangatahi
Gi / no-gi
Beginners can usually start in clean activewear. For gi classes, ask the club about sizing before buying. For no-gi, wear a rashguard/t-shirt and shorts or leggings without zips or hard pockets.
Gi supplier: Storm Kimonos
First class rhythm

Who will you meet?
A few of the coaches and club people you are likely to meet when you arrive.
